The Case of Transformation in Mozambique

Mozambique is now one of Africa’s fastest growing economies. What were the key steps in its path from Civil War, through one party state system and centrally planned socialist economy, to multiparty constitutional democracy? How were the efforts of the country’s internal leadership supported by the international donor community?  Why is the country considered an example of innovation in debt relief and development?

To answer these questions we look at leadership, and focus on the drivers of delivery and successful governance reform. We look at the economic model which balances stability, investment and access to public services. We also assess the next set of challenges: the rural – urban divide, gender disparities and regional imbalances. Should Mozambique adapt the approaches that have brought it so far?
