International Organizations Weak State Strategies: Case Study: The African Union

This paper reviews the progress of the African Union (AU) in promoting governance, democracy and economic growth across Africa. It welcomes the formation of the AU affiliate, New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). This paper argues that the creation of NEPAD, the Economic Social and Cultural Council, and the Pan-African Parliament indicate a shift in political will toward greater transparency.

To further build on this momentum, this paper recommends further steps, including the formation of a coherent fragile state policy and better mechanisms for the AU to engage civil society and the diaspora. Finally, the paper offers suggestions for addressing the most pressing challenges to addressing fragile states including mobilizing further financial resources.
